Democrats vs. Democrats

Though I usually don't agree with Senator Nelson (D- Fla.), I thoroughly support his decision to do something about the DNC stripping Florida of its delegate.

This quote from Sen. Nelson sums up my thoughts on the matter:

"We believe the right to vote, and to have that vote count, is — in fact — the cornerstone of our democracy... Without it, nothing else will work."

Some background on the situation:

"Nelson, with Rep. Alcee Hastings (D-Fla.), made it official Thursday they are suing Dean and the DNC for a declaratory relief injunction to prevent the party from going through with harsh penalties against the state that went into effect automatically Sept. 29. The lawmakers said those penalties effectively will negate the votes of almost 4.5 million voters."

4.5 million voters. And the DNC doesn't want them to vote. Shameful.

I share your frustration at the whole process. I would add, however, that the "right to vote" does not extend to everybody in a primary election. By definition, the process is exclusionary because Republicans, for example, are prohibited (in most states) from voting in Democratic primaries. So it's not really a "right" in that particular circumstance. The Democratic party should be allowed to lay out its own rules and regulations for the way it conducts its affairs.

Even some conservatives would argue that Sen. Nelson as a Federal official should not be regulating the affairs of a private organization (the Democratic party).

I don't know where you are from, but even if the democrats in the Florida state congress voted against moving up the primary, the Republican majority would have still succeeded. So the Democrats couldn't have really done anything to stop it. So basically, the democrats in Florida are being punished for something they had no true control over.

Also, I just think it's funny that democrats - the party of fairness and justice and equality - is stripping a key state of its DNC voting delegates.

I also wouldn't say the Nelson is trying to "regulate" the Democratic party, I think that Nelson is suing as a constituent of the state of Florida.
